For Families

When a loved one is suffering from perinatal mental health, there is a place you can turn to for help.

Are you a spouse/partner or family member concerned about a Mom experiencing a mental health complication?  Perinatal mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety affect the whole family.  While these illnesses are quite common, when they go untreated, they have long-lasting negative effects.

It is important to also know that when Mom may be experiencing mental illness symptoms, Dad/partner has a significantly increased chance of also experienced a mental health complication.  In fact, approximately 1 in 10 Dads or partners will experience postpartum depression or a related illness.  The good news? There is help.

Better Beginnings is the only facility in the Southeastern U.S. dedicated to Mother/Baby partial hospitalization (PHP).

Counseling Services

We aim to partner with and serve our clients in a comfortable environment where you are able to explore challenging issues and understand your feelings and behaviors.

Infertility & Loss

Sometimes what is supposed to be the happiest time of your life is not. Perinatal loss describes loss at any stage of pregnancy, stillbirth or infancy.  This includes when your baby has a life-limiting diagnosis.

Prenatal Preparation

Did you know mental health complications during this time are the #1 health issue?

I have a friend or loved one is suffering. What do I do?

1

Talk

Keep the conversation open about tending to all parts of Mom’s health after having a baby. Emotional adjustment to pregnancy and after delivery is super important; talk about it.

2

Encourage

Encourage Mom or Dad to talk with their trusted medical providers.  Share resources you’ve found, including our website.

3

Celebrate

Celebrate their successes and listen to challenges. Offer concrete/specific support such as: “I am free Saturday mornings, I’d like to be available to help with baby, cleaning, errands, food preparation.”
